Diminished Ideas
I have transcribed some solo passages from three compositions featured on my album Only Human.

Icarus 2:43 (E Lydian)

Here I am playing a diminished (whole/half) line from the root of the bVI chord, which then resolves to V.

I play an octave displacement lick in position and transition into an ascending diminished sweep arpeggio.  The intervallic sequence is (ascending) tritone, minor 3rd, minor 3rd.  I then shift that pattern up a minor 3rd.

(from the live video recording The Making of:  An Interlude In Bleu)

Here I am playing a similar line over the chord changes:  G#dim B-6 11 F#dim/E
I transcribed what I meant to play.

Zebra Club 5:48 (D Mixolydian)

Here I am playing an open string diminished idea.

I combine the I dim (Whole/Half) with I dim (Half/Whole or bII dim Whole/Half).  The effect is a unique outside of key sound.  You can analyze diminished scales and chords in many different ways.  When dealing with symmetrical scales, there are only so many combinations available before the scales begin to repeat.  You can analyze any diminished scale as I diminished, bII diminished or II diminished.

This is not a traditional function of a diminished tonality.  I am not claiming to be the first to play this idea, although I haven’t heard of anyone else who has used it, and analyzed it as such.

I have circled the notes from the Half Whole Diminished Scale.
