- Why do they call you "the guy?"
My father's name is Christopher. My family and close friends have always referred to me as "guy," to avoid confusion. Around the time I began playing in my first garage band, "The Assassins," people started to call me "the guy." I suppose that referring me in the third person regardless of the context became amusing. It stuck. Occasionally people interpret it as some pretentious declaration of superiority, as opposed to an affectionate moniker.
- What do you do when you are not playing the guitar?
I used to love to ride dirt bikes. Supercross and Motocross have been captivating to me from the time I was 8 years old. The summer before my sophomore year at Berklee, I fractured my collar bone and my wrist riding, or rather falling off of my bike. To this day I have recurring problems with my wrist as a result of that accident. I sold my Kawasaki KDX 220R in 2005 in part to subsidise the "Metajam" recording with Kenwood Dennard and Bryan Ladd. Avoiding any more career-compromising injuries was the real reason. Having said that I am lusting over a Ducati 848 and an MV Agusta F4. The freedom of riding motorcycles is so intoxicating. I love to sail. I was a sailing instructor for years, and raced in the J/30 North American races in 2000. I am a complete Formula 1 fanatic. I can name each champion and year off of the top of my head. Grand Prix weekend in Montreal never fails to produce some of the most dubious and exciting experiences of the year. I love most forms of motorsport, just as long as they aren't racing on oval tracks.
- Who are your favorite guitarists?
Well... Jeff Beck is unbelievable. His music has had a profound influence on me. His touch is so beautiful. Of course Jimi Hendrix is amazing. The Band of Gypsies album is so heavy, I cannot get enough of that recording. Shawn Lane is awe-inspiring. He has so much soul and yet his technique is other-worldly. The live recordings with Jonas Hellborg are killin. Buckethead is the man! I saw him live once and he scared the hell out of me. Jim Hall is inspiring. His playing is so emotional, so perfect. There are many guitarists that I love but few that never cease to amaze me.
- What is your favorite food?
I am very fond of sushi, however, NOBU ruined it for me. La Que Du Cheval is an amazing steak house in Montreal... I go through phases. Yesterday I had fried chicken on 134th St.
- What does your rig look like?
At the most minimal: D'Pergo JK Classic, MJM Blues Devil, JAM Delay Lama, Bogner Shiva or Duende, depending on the size of the venue.
